_____________ essential letter from the editor _____________

Hello friends, supporters and newcomers!
This is Steve, dustcircle.com's editor.
Don't forget to subscribe to our updates on the website!
Also, it has come to my attention that some of the VIDEO digests don't show some of the videos in the mailings. These are accessible on the website. The next VIDEOS emails I send out, I'll provide a link to the website so you can view the videos, instead of seeing just a list.
I maintain the website mostly on my own, usually putting in a couple of hours per day on the digests, reading and sorting through websites and websites of news, picking and choosing the best and most relevant headlines for you all.
If you've appreciated and have benefited from these mailings, use the WEPAY button on the website to donate any amount to the upkeep of the website, and to help offset the hours I put into this project. I'd thank you immensely.
We have two relatively new sections to the website: REVIEWS and EBOOK. I am personally writing a book, of which I have a Facebook fan page for. LIKE the page, and I'll drop exclusive leaks on the book (Yes, free chapters). Also, if you yourself have written a book, I'd like to review it! See the above links for more information on these two matters.
Again, thank you much for reading and participating in this website. I do it not for me, but for you.

Americans abandoned
No power, no heat, no food, destroyed homes

The best response to disaster: Go on the offensive

We’re usually inclined to fight power when it is being carried out, but that’s often too late to stop it. Similarly, we’re inclined to fight power where it is most felt — in our communities, in the poor neighborhoods and communities of color around the city, in the ghettos that separate the many from the few who profit from their exploitation. That, too, is a mistake, because the powerful make decisions far, far away from there.

The number of terrorist attacks each year has more than quadrupled in the decade since September 11, 2001, a study released on Tuesday said, with Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan the most affected.

Could Citizen Reporting Be the Sweet Spot for Local Engagement?

Mainstream news organizations have had mixed results with citizen news reporting. While crowd-sourcing efforts such as CNN's iReport and Help Me Investigate have yielded valuable information, many other efforts have foundered, often on journalists' expectation that citizen-created news must look like what the professionals produce to have value.

US Violates Agreement; Punishes Iran
Administration’s pretentious concern for the Iranian peoples’ welfare is all the more offensive in light of the harsh, illegal, and life-threatening sanctions imposed on that nation, aptly described by The New England Journal of Medicine as a “war against public health” (Gowans).  The Obama administration would have us believe that it is concerned about human rights and freedom of expression where it has no regard for life itself, much less freedom.

The War On Women Continues In Ohio
ast year, anti-choice advocates in Ohio pushed extreme legislation to ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected - which often occurs as early as six weeks, before many women may even know they’re pregnant. So-called "heartbeat" bills like HB 125 are so radical that they often divide the anti-abortion community, and this particular legislation has been stalled in the Ohio Senate since June 2011.

Can This Farmer Finally Defeat Monsanto?

Can This Farmer Finally Defeat Monsanto? There are many reasons to question GMOs in our food supply. One such issue being our freedom of choice. When GM crops are grown next to non-GM crops we often see issues of contamination. This contamination may be due to many factors including human error, wind, birds, bees and floods. Contamination has continually posed a problem in the agricultural sector and in many cases has resulted in lawsuits where farmers suffer under the hand of corporations hiding behind the guise of ‘patent infringement.’ You may remember the case of Canadian farmer, Percy Schmeiser who was charged with patent infringement by Monsanto. Schmeiser stood up to Monsanto and obtained a settlement out of court for Monsanto to clean up his land. The result was seemingly in his favor, however, Schmeiser was left with weighty legal bills and the legal framework was left unchanged with the Federal Court of Canada upholding the validity of Monsanto’s patent.

American foreign policy, a foreign perspective
Canada and the United States have long had what, from the outside, can be seen as a symbiotic relationship. We used to have (until recently) the world’s longest undefended border. We signed on to NAFTA even though it benefited us far less than it did our neighbours to the south. On the world stage, America is the cartoon Bulldog and Canada is the Jack Russell terrier jumping around asking, “what are we doing today, Spike?”

Shameless Disaster Capitalism: How Companies Are Already Planning to Get Rich Off Superstorm Sandy

Yes that’s right: this catastrophe very likely created by climate change—a crisis born of the colossal regulatory failure to prevent corporations from treating the atmosphere as their open sewer—is just one more opportunity for more deregulation.
Once Again—Death of the Liberal Class
The presidential election exposed the liberal class as a corpse. It fights for nothing. It stands for nothing. It is a useless appendage to the corporate state. It exists not to make possible incremental or piecemeal reform, as it originally did in a functional capitalist democracy; instead it has devolved into an instrument of personal vanity, burnishing the hollow morality of its adherents. Liberals, by voting for Barack Obama, betrayed the core values they use to define themselves—the rule of law, the safeguarding of civil liberties, the protection of unions, the preservation of social welfare programs, environmental accords, financial regulation, a defiance of unjust war and torture, and the abolition of drone wars. The liberal class clung desperately during the long nightmare of this political campaign to one or two issues, such as protecting a woman’s right to choose and gender equality, to justify its complicity in a monstrous evil. This moral fragmentation—using an isolated act of justice to define one’s self while ignoring the vast corporate assault on the nation and the ecosystem along with the pre-emptive violence of the imperial state—is moral and political capitulation. It fails to confront the evil we have become.

America: Myth, Reality, Death Squads and al-Qaeda
Obama claimed he has "never been more hopeful about our future, never been more hopeful about America," and proclaimed that "the best is yet to come." In short, it was a bunch of jingoistic nonsense that flew in the face of the reality of life in the USA and what it has done and continues to do to the rest of the world.

About the Untold History of the United States
The Untold History of the United States is not people's history in the sense of telling the stories of popular movements.  This is very much top-down history dominated by key figures in power.  But it is honest history that tears through myths and presents a reality not expected by most Americans -- and backs it up with well-documented facts.

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

The class issues in the 2012 elections
The Socialist Equality Party calls on all its supporters in the US to cast a vote for SEP candidates Jerry White for president and Phyllis Scherrer for vice president in today’s election. A vote for the SEP is a class-conscious statement of support for the socialist, working-class alternative to the two parties of big business, the Democrats and Republicans.

20 Things You Didn’t Know About The White House
The 2012 election has been one of the most hyped in history. We’ve been hearing about both these candidate for years now, so at this point you probably know everything there is to know about them. But what do you know about the house they are battling to inhabit: the White House? Probably less than you think.

WHY BETTING MARKETS AND POLLS DON'T AGREE
According to election polls, the presidential race is neck and neck. According to election polls, our country is split right down the middle. According to election polls, it's anyone's guess who will be the next president of the United States.

Voters increasingly post their ballot outcomes on social media
Americans going to the polls increasingly let others know the outcome of their vote by announcing it through social media, the Pew Research Center finds.

7 Reasons to Vote for Obama over Romney

Obama vs. Romney on Civil Liberties

The Religious Right

Cross Procession on the National Mall
The movement generally referred to in the United States as the Religious Right came of age in the late 1970s. While the Religious Right is extremely diverse and shouldn't be characterized in simple terms, the movement as we have come to know it is an ultraconservative religious response to the sexual revolution and other events that are seen, by Religious Right proponents, as being connected to the sexual revolution--and an attempt to effect this religious response as public policy.

The Dogs of War Are Barking, Mitt Romney’s Team Wants to Let ‘Em Loose in Iran
It’s the consensus among the pundits: foreign policy doesn’t matter in this presidential election. They point to the ways Republican candidate Mitt Romney has more or less parroted President Barack Obama on just about everything other than military spending and tough talk about another “American century.” The consensus is wrong. There is an issue that matters: Iran.

Why Do Both Major Parties Suck So Badly On Civil Liberties?

Over the weekend, I saw an article on Salon about how shameful it is that supporters of President Obama, who were loud in their condemnation of attacks on civil liberties by George W. Bush, seemed to ignore that President Obama has been worse in many ways (despite many public promises to the contrary). We've already noted that the Democratic Party -- which had fixing civil liberties abuses in its 2008 platform -- has removed all traces of that from the new platform. You would think that, for those who believe strongly in civil liberties, this would be a major concern. Rather than fix them, President Obama continued or expanded many of the very questionable policies of his predecessor, and then added a number of terrifying new ones.

But before today’s race becomes yesterday’s news and we move on to the transition or the fiscal cliff or (God forbid) the recount, we at TPM wanted to take one last look back at just how far we’ve come.

Which Prez candidate should a single-issue, federal-sentencing-reform voter support?

article image
I ask this question with a serious interest in encouraging a serious (and respectful) discussion of whether folks think either of the two fellows seeking to be the US President over the next four years is likely to get behind and seek to move forward with federal sentencing reforms. If time permits late tonight, I will update this post to explain why I truly am not sure if there is an obvious answer to which candidate is more likely over the next four years to be interested and able to engender serious federal sentencing reform.  In the meantime, let me hear readers thoughts only hours before the final day for voting begins.

Swing States that Will Decide the Presidential Election
If you haven't seen any political ads for President Obama or Mitt Romney, then you're probably (a) somewhat thankful and (b) not living in a "swing state," which will most likely help "swing" the election. Here is a quick analysis of the swing states and how Obama and Romney look so far, from the NY Daily News and the New York Times' polling predictor Nate Silver.

Most Mormon Men are Also the Mormon Priests and BishopsIn the Mormon church, all power flows through the all-male priesthood which consists of all Mormon men above a certain age. Priests hold all of the religious authority for sealing, binding, and loosing — the central sacred acts of the Mormon Church which serve to determine every Mormon's eternal destiny. These priests hold all of the keys to eternal life and are themselves the key to the claim of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that it is the only legitimate Christian church on earth.
