New World Order

You want us to stand down. You want us to back off. You want us to shut up while our country and our sovereignty and our borders and everything we've ever been and everything we'll ever be is being destroyed. You got the nerve to call us traitors and call us conspiracy theorists just because we're informed.

Class War

The US military with its vast complex web of branches, agencies and bureaucracies is, in socio-political terms, a metastasized cancer run rampant in the American body of politics, and the Americans are dying of it. Not surprising, the core purpose of armies is to kill people. Every country that has ever had one claimed it was for defense but all history proves their function has never varied - to kill people and appropriate their wealth.

Life after Guantanamo

In this episode, Fault Lines traveled to Yemen to ask what the consequences of America's policy of indefinite detention have been and to find out what life is like there, after Guantanamo.

Getting Rich

It is one of the most extraordinary transformations of our time - China. A country long in the grip of communism is now devoted to private enterprise. That is what they had to do for the ordinary people of China to become richer. This new economic superpower is taking on the West. But China's surging economy has a dark side. Can China keep moving forward or will the forces of change tear it apart?

Into the Fire: The Hidden Victims of Austerity

Most refugees arrive in Europe by foot or by boat, landing in Greece, Italy and Spain. Under EU regulations, asylum claims have to be made in the country through which refugees first enter Europe. They cannot move to another European country. In 2011 the European Court of Human Rights found that asylum seekers in Greece are at risk of inhuman and degrading treatment. There are deficiencies in the asylum procedure, the detention conditions and the living conditions in Greece.

Assassination Nation

The most successful suicide attack of all time was 9/11. In fact, it was powerful that it led to the US invasion of both Iraq and Afghanistan. 11 years ago, the US Army invaded Afghanistan with the sole purpose of getting Al Qaeda and Taliban. Today, the US government is entering into negotiations with the Taliban to see just how much power they will gain when our troops leave. This is a direct result of the Taliban's successful use of terror techniques, suicide attacks, and suicide bombing.

War Crimes

Not long ago, one out of every five prisoners in America was a Vietnam vet. More and more veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are showing up behind bars and many are being charged with violent crime. Experts are saying that there's a common thread that often runs through these cases, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.

Earth in 1000 Years

Scientists are tracking the overall rate of ice loss with the Grace Satellite. They found that from 2003 to 2009, Greenland lost about a trillion tons, mostly along its coastlines. This number mirror's ice loss in the Arctic as a whole. By 2012, summer sea ice coverage had fallen to a little more than half of what it was in the year 1980. While the ice rebounded in 2013, the coverage was still well below the average of the last three decades. Analyzing global data from Grace, one study reports that Earth lost about 4,000 cubic kilometers of ice in the decade leading up to 2012.

Eyewar

These are some of the topics addressed in Eyewar: 80 minutes of found footage which traces the development of the digital image from the maps of the second century to the screens of the twenty-first, and the uses of the field of cybernetics from Japan in the 1940s to Chile in the 1970s and Iraq in the 1990s.

Five facts about America's Pathological Wealth Distribution
Most people associate inequality with the income gap. As distorted as the distribution of income may be, our wealth distribution is even more extreme. Americans are beginning to realize that years of preferential tax treatment for the rich, under the guise of "supply-side job creation" nonsense, have bloated the fortunes of the super-rich to a level that would make Rockefeller and Carnegie envious.

Europeans outraged over the US using Patriot Act for worldwide spying

United States Department of Homeland Security logo

In a just published study, Cloud Computing in Higher Education and Research Institutions and the USA Patriot Act, researchers from the school’s Institute for Information Law say that legislation enacted to allegedly protect the security of US citizens has in the process eroded privacy protections on a global scale.

A Look Back at 2012

A LOOK BACK AT 2012

Why the World Bank Must Divest from Fossil Fuels

The World Bank’s latest report on climate change, “Turn Down the Heat,” warns that the planet is on track for a four-degree Celsius temperature rise by 2100. Like many scientists, the bank fears that such an increase would be incompatible with civilization as we know it. At the very least, rapid global warming—and the storms, droughts and other extreme weather it would unleash—would render the bank’s mission of alleviating poverty and fostering sustainable development impossible.

Mother Nature Belongs at the Bargaining Table

As the highly scripted stagecraft of the presidential campaign fades from the headlines, there's a new show in Washington. ”Fiscal Cliff” stars President Barack Obama, who urges Republicans and Democrats to agree on a ”grand bargain” that would soften the economic shock of the impending across-the-board tax and spending cuts. But that bipartisan handshake would be nothing to celebrate.

Kyoto all Over Again? US Obstructive Force at Climate Talks

World leaders have agreed on one thing at COP18—so called developing countries will suffer the most extreme effects of climate change; however, the world's richest nations continued on Wednesday to refuse to help prepare these nations for their current and imminent disasters and, more pointedly, to help curb global warming greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable energy development.

Police Have the Scary Capability to Track Wherever You're Driving

License-plate reading technology's jaw dropping capabilities are already deployed across America.

Police Can Record Video Inside Your Home Without A Warrant, Appeals Court Says

Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court provided some comfort to those fearing the seemingly limitless potential of new technologies to enable government privacy invasion. In holding that police could not attach a GPS device to a car and track it for 30 days without a warrant, the court said, “At bottom, we must ‘assur[e] preservation of that degree of privacy against government that existed when the Fourth Amendment was adopted.’”

Why Occupy Wall Street’s Rolling Jubilee Puts Borrowers at Risk

The strategy is well-meaning, but there are better approaches to relieving debt.

How the Government Can Still Get Your Digital Data
Meyer and Maass: 'Authorities can often obtain your emails and texts by going to Google or AT&T with a simple subpoena.' (photo: unknown)he U.S. government isn't allowed to wiretap American citizens without a warrant from a judge. But there are plenty of legal ways for law enforcement, from the local sheriff to the FBI, to snoop on the digital trails you create every day. Authorities can often obtain your emails and texts by going to Google or AT&T with a simple subpoena. Usually you won't even be notified. The Senate last weektook a step toward updating privacy protection for emails, but it's likely the issue will be kicked to the next Congress.

Who controls the internet? The debate is live and clicking

The ITU is currently meeting in Dubai under the banner of the World Conference on International Telecommunication (WCIT-12). The agenda is to consider changes to the International Telecommunication Regulations (ITR) – a treaty signed by 178 countries in 1988 to establish principles for the operation of international telecommunications.

The Times Should Have a Reporter at the Bradley Manning Hearing

In failing to send its own reporter to cover the fascinating and important pretrial testimony of Bradley Manning, The New York Times missed the boat.

The value of a woman's life

We need to make sure that we do not take the blame for the violence that is visited upon us. We need to develop a sense of self that cannot be eroded, a sense of self that is rounded and whole. It is what saves a woman in the final analysis.

No Surprise Here: Congress Passes Unanimous Resolution Telling The ITU: Hands Off The Internet

One thing that's been somewhat universal in the US is pretty much everyone's opposition to the whole ITU WCIT charade going on in Dubai right now. It doesn't matter what political party they belong to or what general views on technology or the internet they hold, pretty much everyone recognizes, even if there are faults with the system today, giving the ITU more control will inevitably make things worse. So it should come as little surprise that Congress has passed another resolution (they did an earlier one in August that more or less said the same thing) unanimously (397-0) telling the ITU to not even think about trying to take over any aspect of internet governance.
