@dustcirclenews - Free DOCUMENTARIES: Dark Days, Down to the Earth's Core, Sniper, History of Syria, How Many People Can Live on Planet Earth, Surgery's Dirty Secrets, I Lost My Job, Mexico's Female Crime Journalists

If the videos aren't visible in your email, they will be on the website: http://www.dustcircle.com

Dark Days

Filmmaker Marc Singer brings a unique view of New York City’s homeless in a very raw film. Dark Days was made by Singer spending 2 years living in the subterranean tunnels with the people that society has cast out. These people have come together to form a sort of underground community. This film, shot in black and white and without narration, reveals some of the lives of those in these ‘hidden’ communities.

National Geographic: Down to the Earth’s Core

Learn about what is going on under your feet as National Geographic plunges into Earth’s depths to reveal the history of our world and what is below us.

Sniper: Inside The Crosshairs

Sniper: Inside The Crosshairs brings us the psychological and strategic thinking behind one of the battlefield’s most notorious weapon: the sniper. Learning from some of the best marksmen in the industry, they destruct previous missions, showing the planning and mentality involved.

A History of Syria

Robin Barnwell, who directed and produced ‘A History of Syria with Dan Snow’, explains the challenges of filming amid the conflict, and describes the spirit of the Syrian people he met.

How Many People Can Live On Planet Earth

In a Horizon special, naturalist Sir David Attenborough investigates whether the world is heading for a population crisis.

Surgery’s Dirty Secrets

Vigorous investigation of a topical issue. Panorama investigates concerns about the quality of surgical instruments being used on patients in the UK. Reporter Samantha Poling hears from those working inside the NHS who claim that tools with dangerous defects are being supplied to hospitals.

I LOST MY JOB

I Lost My Job is a short documentary film which sets out to explore the phenomenon which is affecting and due to affect many people’s lives – namely, technological unemployment. The documentary also examines what we can do about it as a society through the analysis of a transitional direction.

MEXICO’S FEMALE CRIME JOURNALISTS

We travel to Ciudad Juarez to meet the journalists who cover politics and crime for the Diario de Juarez. All of them are women and they have covered more crimes than anyone we can think of. They are also some of the bravest women we’ve ever met. We followed them around the city as they covered political rallies of the ruling party, PAN, and to crime scenes, to try to understand what happened there over the past few years and why the candidates were not fully addressing the most glaring issue in Mexican politics right now.

The first thing to understand about the XL Foods recall is that it was almost certainly preventable. As in all such incidents, those responsible would have us believe it was some kind of fluke, unforeseeable and beyond human control. This is unlikely.
1. Romney attempted to convey the impression that he has worked to increase women's employment as governor, reaching out to women's groups and receiving "binders of women" from them. (Yes, that is what he said). But Romney made no effort to hire women managers at Bain Capital, and even today only 4 of out of 49 of Bain's managing directors are women.

Economic Inequality Must Be Part of the Debate!

The future of our democracy is at stake. For four decades, the divide between the rich and the poor has been widening -- that didn't just start with this administration. We have allowed our government to be bought and sold by a few lobbyists and the billionaires and millionaires who line their pockets with oil, prison, war, gun and insurance money. In those forty years, there has not been anyone that has represented these hijackers of our democracy better than "Money" Mitt Romney. He is THEIR guy! That is precisely why the Super PACs spend most of their money on his campaign (4 to 1), because they know that he is for sale, like a NASCAR driver.

Twitter’s First Act Of Censorship Silences Neo-Nazi Profile In Germany
Back in January Twitter unveiled a revision to their stance on censorship – namely, that while they agreed that the tweets must continue to flow, Twitter’s increasing position on the international stage meant that, inevitably, they would have to work with governments and enforcement agencies on a per-country basis in order to better serve their respective values and norms with regard to freedom of expression.

Presidential Polls 2012: 15 Percent Less Young People Will Vote in 2012

This morning the Harvard Public Opinion Project released our bi-annual poll of over 2,000 18-29 year olds from all across the United States. The poll provides a unique insight into millennial thinking about the 2012 election especially in comparison to our previous polling going back over a decade.

Consumer Reports found varying levels of arsenic in more than 60 rices and rice products. (photo: Consumer Reports)ong before human beings decoded the human genome or split the atom, they discovered that arsenic is very good at killing things. The ancient Romans prized it as a murder weapon because it could be mixed into food or drink without altering its color, taste, or smell. Plus, a tiny dose kills without fail.

Five Reasons Politicians Can No Longer Ignore the Nones

The news on “nones” is the latest hot topic.(1) Not just around secular movement water coolers, but in the mainstream media. Major newspapers read: “losing our religion,” “one in five Americans reports no religious affiliation” and “labeled ‘nones’ because they claim either no religious preference or no religion at all.” While the public focus is on the changing religious identity of the average American, the takeaway for elected officials should be this: the religious unaffiliated are a growing segment of the electorate.

We are here. We have no religion. Get used to it.

On Tuesday, the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life published itsnewest findings on the religiously unaffiliated or "nones". The study finds that nearly 20 percent of Americans are unaffiliated. What's more, they grew up with religion  and now are unaffiliated (74 percent), aren't looking for a religion (88 percent) and feel religion has no place in politics (67 percent). In short: they are happy without religion and don't want it imposed on them.http://secular.org/blogs/lauren-youngblood/we-are-here-we-have-no-religion-get-used-it

The Secular Movement Can Reshape Public Policy

With a new survey from Pew showing that about one in five Americans are now religiously unaffiliated, it would be reasonable to ask what impact, if any, the rapidly growing secular movement will have on public policy. (Among those under 30, the percentage is even higher: one in three.) This enormous demographic, silent for so long, is finding its voice, and the fallout could be significant.

Debates should probe Obama’s ‘Big Brother’ expansion, according to politicians, journalists and privacy activists
Discussion of the continued expansion of the “Big Brother” surveillance apparatus in the United States in recent years has been notably absent during the presidential debates, raising concern among journalists, politicians and privacy rights activists that candidates aren’t being pressed or even queried on what they see as a continuing erosion of civil liberties in the country.

US violent, property crime rates increased in 2011: DOJ
Photo source or descriptionThe US Department of Justice (DOJ) [official website] announced Wednesday that both violent crime and property crime rates increased from 2010 to 2011 [report, PDF; press release]. This is the first time the DOJ has reported an increase in crime rates since 1993. Overall violent crime, which the DOJ defines as rape or sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated and simple assault, increased by 17 percent. Property crime, which the DOJ defines as burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft, increased by 11 percent. The DOJ attributed the increase in violent crime to an increase in reported assaults, emphasizing that rates for the other areas stayed steady or dropped.

In the 21st century the opportunity society has disappeared. Middle class jobs are scarce. Indeed, jobs of any kind are scarce. To stay even with population growth from 2002 through 2011, the economy needed about 14 million new jobs. However, at the end of 2011 there were only 1 million more jobs than in 2002.

How We Gained the Ability to Create Our Own End Times

Here was the oddest thing: within weeks of the United States dropping an atomic bomb on a second Japanese city on August 9, 1945, and so obliterating it, Americans were already immersed in new scenarios of nuclear destruction.  As the late Paul Boyer so vividly described in his classic book By the Bomb’s Early Light, it took no time at all -- at a moment when no other nation had such potentially Earth-destroying weaponry -- for an America triumphant to begin to imagine itself in ruins, and for its newspapers and magazines to start drawing concentric circles of death and destruction around American cities while consigning their future country to the stewardship of the roaches.

Why Republicans Think Leading From Weakness Will Work

I'm looking at Politico and I see that the bizarre decision to start the rollout of the Romney-Ryan ticket with a focus on Medicare isn't just a strange notion cooked up at Romney headquarters -- it's a strategy endorsed by much of the GOP:

90 Million Americans Can’t Be Wrong
When asked by USA Today and Suffolk University why they're not planning to vote this November, respondents answered that: "They're too busy. They aren't excited about either candidate. Their vote doesn't really matter. And nothing ever gets done, anyway." All are excellent reasons, especially the last two, for they lay bare the great lie that elections solve anything. The results of the poll indicate that some 90 million Americans have no intention to vote in this year's presidential election; let’s hope that number swells over the coming months.

US Court Allows Patents On Human Genes
Is a gene more like a tree trunk or more like a baseball bat? A federal court Thursday took a stand on the question, ruling that isolated DNA molecules are “not found in nature”, and are therefore more like inventions, such as baseball bats, than natural phenomenon, such as tree trunks.

Do Not Reward Israeli Apartheid!
More than 15,000 illegal Israeli Jewish settlers were added last year making the current number of “illegal settlers” 650,000. Yet still you propose a Palestinian state based on the Bantustans we have been herded into, without rights to water, to real movement, to airspace, sea space and certainly no rights to the 6 million refugees around the world who European countries have continually turned their backs on.

Chief Judge Royce Lamberth expressed skepticism about the new restrictions [AP report], which in some cases require a lawyer to sign a "memorandum of understanding" (MOU) [memorandum, PDF] to continue to be able to meet with a client, making any meetings or communications with a client "subject to the authority and discretion" of the Guantanamo commanding officer.

Seven Banks Under Investigation for Global Interest Rate Scandal

The scandal involves LIBOR - or the London Inter Bank Offer Rate - a global system of interest rates for $360 trillion in international deposits. While many of these loans are overnight transfers between banks, they affect the price of consumer loans like mortgages, car loans and credit card loans. The rates are set by the British Bankers Association which makes a considered average of rates reported to them verbally by participating bankers.

The World (Still) Too Big to Fail

In Noam Chomsky’s “Who Owns the World?” -- the most popular TomDispatch post of all time (which means the last 10 years) -- he wrote of one key imperial principle: “The U.S. cannot tolerate ‘any exercise of sovereignty’ that interferes with its global designs.”  Hence, the under-reported but staggering U.S. build-up in the Persian Gulf.

Christian-Right Terrorism Charlatans

The Church of England British Police and Troops had their own Right wing, Protestant "Terror Experts" that committed Bloody Sunday. How did that work out for them, long term? These Charlatan Terror Experts created the very terrorists they claimed to be "fighting and preventing". Their brutal oppression methods and the mounting toll of dead Catholics created a scenario that still is unfolding: http://www.u.tv/News/Bomb-factory-part-of-wider-plot/ddbd0ec8-0596-4488-8fe5-8fd85e18f1d6 .

Who Speaks For The Internet? Do Artists have No Voice Online?

We’re always kinda amazed when a singular entity or point of view “speaks for the internet” as if there is no social, economic, geographic or political diversity. Is the “Internet’ a demographic onto it’s own, and if so, what defines that demographic? Which begs the question, does “the internet” speak for you (as an artist, as an individual)? Though this entry is somewhat cute, it is also disturbing to see “the internet” as a single block with a Borg like hive mind… TechDirt reports:

Kentucky Republicans Complain About Teaching Evolution

Evolution has been a favorite target of conservative Republicans for a very long time now. In the last few years alone, Republicans have made every effort to push for teaching the Biblical story of creation in science classrooms in states such as Louisiana, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Indiana, and elsewhere. Republicans in Kentucky, apparently feeling left out, are now jumping into the fray to fight against real science as well.

Mitt Romney Vowed To Boost National Debt By $716 Billion, And Nobody Cares?

Romney has just made his duties as presumptive president $716 billion harder if he wins the race. Because Ryan said that the money cut from Obamacare would go back into a similar program, Romney, with a typical obstructionist attitude, has decided that simply isn’t the right thing to do.
