In a Year of Politicians and Bad News, Surprising Stories of Resistance
Unions once again dropped a lot of cash and burned a lot of shoe leather defending against the greater evils of a Romney administration and a Republican Senate. But winning meant holding the line, at best, and a hard pivot after Election Day to defend what too many Democrats won’t: Social Security and Medicare.

House Approves Bill Authorizing $633 Billion in War Spending
The Republican-controlled House approved the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act by a vote of 315-107. The measure must still be approved by the Senate before it can go to President Barack Obama to be signed into law.

US Military Needs to Leave Afghanistan and Stop Widening Drone Strikes

There is perhaps no time in American history when our leaders have fought a war with so little support. More than 60 percent of Americans want out of Afghanistan. Even at the peak of the anti-Vietnam-war movement, after a majority had turned against the war, there were still a large number of citizens who believed in the war and its official justifications. Today, as my colleague Robert Naiman of Just Foreign Policy notes, “Western leaders have largely given up trying to explain or justify why Western troops are still in Afghanistan and why they are still killing and being killed.”

Don't Trust the Research Saying Video Games Cause Real-World Aggression

Video GamesIn a press conference this morning, the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre addressed the Sandy Hook school shootings by suggesting that, rather than ban assault weapons, we put armed guards in every American school. LaPierre also blamed America’s “culture of violence” on violent movies and video games. The armed guards thing is being addressed elsewhere on this site, but suffice it to say it’s a weird and implausibly expensive idea that will never, ever happen. The video game point, however, merits a little more scrutiny.

Congress Should Extend Emergency Unemployment Benefits Now

President Obama and Speaker of the House John BoehnerAs President Barack Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) work to resolve the fiscal showdown, lawmakers should at least agree that extending emergency unemployment insurance is the right thing to do in order to protect workers and encourage economic growth.

Strengthening Our Democracy by Expanding Voting Rights

The past two years were not kind to those who hold dear one of our most cherished rights—the right to vote. After the Republican wave of 2010, which saw conservative majorities swept into governors’ mansions and state legislatures, more than a dozen states—including Wisconsin, Florida, and Texas—passed legislation making it more difficult for voters to cast a ballot. The conservative cause celebre became legislation enacting voter ID, shortening early voting, and requiring citizens to show a birth certificate or passport in order to register to vote.

Five facts about America's Pathological Wealth Distribution
Most people associate inequality with the income gap. As distorted as the distribution of income may be, our wealth distribution is even more extreme. Americans are beginning to realize that years of preferential tax treatment for the rich, under the guise of "supply-side job creation" nonsense, have bloated the fortunes of the super-rich to a level that would make Rockefeller and Carnegie envious.

Europeans outraged over the US using Patriot Act for worldwide spying

United States Department of Homeland Security logo

In a just published study, Cloud Computing in Higher Education and Research Institutions and the USA Patriot Act, researchers from the school’s Institute for Information Law say that legislation enacted to allegedly protect the security of US citizens has in the process eroded privacy protections on a global scale.

A Look Back at 2012

A LOOK BACK AT 2012

Why the World Bank Must Divest from Fossil Fuels

The World Bank’s latest report on climate change, “Turn Down the Heat,” warns that the planet is on track for a four-degree Celsius temperature rise by 2100. Like many scientists, the bank fears that such an increase would be incompatible with civilization as we know it. At the very least, rapid global warming—and the storms, droughts and other extreme weather it would unleash—would render the bank’s mission of alleviating poverty and fostering sustainable development impossible.

Mother Nature Belongs at the Bargaining Table

As the highly scripted stagecraft of the presidential campaign fades from the headlines, there's a new show in Washington. ”Fiscal Cliff” stars President Barack Obama, who urges Republicans and Democrats to agree on a ”grand bargain” that would soften the economic shock of the impending across-the-board tax and spending cuts. But that bipartisan handshake would be nothing to celebrate.

Kyoto all Over Again? US Obstructive Force at Climate Talks

World leaders have agreed on one thing at COP18—so called developing countries will suffer the most extreme effects of climate change; however, the world's richest nations continued on Wednesday to refuse to help prepare these nations for their current and imminent disasters and, more pointedly, to help curb global warming greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable energy development.

Police Have the Scary Capability to Track Wherever You're Driving

License-plate reading technology's jaw dropping capabilities are already deployed across America.

Police Can Record Video Inside Your Home Without A Warrant, Appeals Court Says

Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court provided some comfort to those fearing the seemingly limitless potential of new technologies to enable government privacy invasion. In holding that police could not attach a GPS device to a car and track it for 30 days without a warrant, the court said, “At bottom, we must ‘assur[e] preservation of that degree of privacy against government that existed when the Fourth Amendment was adopted.’”

Why Occupy Wall Street’s Rolling Jubilee Puts Borrowers at Risk

The strategy is well-meaning, but there are better approaches to relieving debt.

How the Government Can Still Get Your Digital Data
Meyer and Maass: 'Authorities can often obtain your emails and texts by going to Google or AT&T with a simple subpoena.' (photo: unknown)he U.S. government isn't allowed to wiretap American citizens without a warrant from a judge. But there are plenty of legal ways for law enforcement, from the local sheriff to the FBI, to snoop on the digital trails you create every day. Authorities can often obtain your emails and texts by going to Google or AT&T with a simple subpoena. Usually you won't even be notified. The Senate last weektook a step toward updating privacy protection for emails, but it's likely the issue will be kicked to the next Congress.

Who controls the internet? The debate is live and clicking

The ITU is currently meeting in Dubai under the banner of the World Conference on International Telecommunication (WCIT-12). The agenda is to consider changes to the International Telecommunication Regulations (ITR) – a treaty signed by 178 countries in 1988 to establish principles for the operation of international telecommunications.

The value of a woman's life

We need to make sure that we do not take the blame for the violence that is visited upon us. We need to develop a sense of self that cannot be eroded, a sense of self that is rounded and whole. It is what saves a woman in the final analysis.

No Surprise Here: Congress Passes Unanimous Resolution Telling The ITU: Hands Off The Internet

One thing that's been somewhat universal in the US is pretty much everyone's opposition to the whole ITU WCIT charade going on in Dubai right now. It doesn't matter what political party they belong to or what general views on technology or the internet they hold, pretty much everyone recognizes, even if there are faults with the system today, giving the ITU more control will inevitably make things worse. So it should come as little surprise that Congress has passed another resolution (they did an earlier one in August that more or less said the same thing) unanimously (397-0) telling the ITU to not even think about trying to take over any aspect of internet governance.
