America’s Book Of Secrets: The Pentagon

It is the epicenter of America’s military operations, a five-sided fortress with a single purpose, to defend the United States and its citizens. But behind the concrete walls and re-enforced windows are secrets. Enter the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense and explore the complex operations and top-secret business conducted at the largest low-rise office building in the world. How did the Pentagon get its unusual shape? How many people work at the Pentagon? What covert intelligence gathering organizations operate within the military compound, and how are their secrets protected? What top-secret information was compromised from the attack on September 11th? How quickly did the building and its tenants get back to business as usual? For seven decades, the Pentagon has been an icon of American strength and military excellence. But more impressive than the building itself are the secrets held there…until now

Are The Net Police Coming For You?

A proposed new law is threatening to disconnect the millions of internet users who unlawfully download free music, films and TV. Jo Whiley looks at how broadband use at home may never be the same, and could even be cut off.

Hijacking Catastrophe

This documentary examines how a radical fringe of the Republican Party used the trauma of the 9/11 terror attacks to advance a pre-existing agenda to radically transform American foreign policy while rolling back civil liberties and social programs at home.

Drugs, Inc: High Stakes Vegas

This documentary takes us inside the world of the drug dealers, gangs, and the Mexican cartel traffickers who are making their millions from the tourists who flock here looking for a good time. From the VIP party host to the notorious Playboy Bloods street gang who control the crack industry in West Las Vegas, to the Mexican cartel trafficker who uses three different identities to stay under the radar of the police.

The Man Who Killed Osama Bin Laden

Meet the Navy SEAL who killed Osama bin Laden as he opens up in this animated film about the 2011 raid and those three shots that changed history and his life. The film tells the story of the personal aftermath and startling failure of the United States government to help its most experienced and skilled soldiers carry on with their lives.

Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq

Three-time Emmy winner James Gandolfini returns to HBO with the documentary special Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq. The documentary about wounded soldiers surveys the physical and emotional cost of war through memories of their “alive day,” the day they narrowly escaped death in Iraq.

Wham Bam Thank You Scam

This is the story of someone who got scammed by a fabricated stock broking firm (actually a sophisticated gang of fraudsters in South East Asia). While the back story is fairly typical – a western man answers the phone to a seemingly legitimate American sounding financial adviser who is touting financial investments, and an impressive sounding firm, with returns which are attractive but no so attractive as to warrant suspicion. The man entrusts the firm with thousands of his life savings, and sure enough eventually the line goes cold, and when he goes to withdraw his money, it’s not there. So what do you do then? For most people the answer is a visit to the police where they inform you of the futility of getting your money back; and thus all hope of getting their money back or any form of justice is all but impossible. But not for this man! This man, Keith Jones, is not one to sit by while the world screws him over – he sets out to Thailand to track down the fraudsters and expose police incompetence, international loopholes, and the apathy of a major corporate bank. Informative as it is intriguing.

Inside Death Row with Trevor McDonald

Trevor McDonald goes inside one of America’s most notorious maximum security prisons, Indiana State, where he comes face-to-face with 12 condemned men awaiting execution.

Death Row Interviews

Every Saturday night in China, millions gather around their televisions to watch Interviews Before Execution, an extraordinary talk show which interviews prisoners on death row. In the weeks, days or even minutes before they are executed, presenter Ding Yu goes into prisons and talks to those condemned to die. Combining clips from the TV show, never before seen footage of China’s death row and interviews with a local judge who openly questions the future of the death penalty in China, This World reveals a part of China that is generally hidden from from view.

Alone in the Wilderness

Dick Proenneke retired at age 50 in 1967 and decided to build his own cabin on the shore of Twin Lakes. The first summer he scouted for the best cabin site, and cut and peeled the logs he would need for his cabin. Dick Proenneke returned the next summer to finish the cabin where he lived for over 30 years. Dick filmed his adventures, and Bob Swerer later turned the film into a video so we can all watch this amazing man build his cabin by hand.
