The Inevitable Collapse of Organized Religion in America

The Inevitable Collapse of Organized Religion in AmericaOrganized religion in America is on the decline. The Church—any church, all churches, the omniscient "Church" representing all organized religious institutions—holds less allure for a new generation of American adults. This is a fact, not a supposition. The Church, though far from gone, is an institution of the past. A new report from the Pew Research Center makes clear two things: 1) America is still an overwhelmingly religious country, and 2) America is becoming a less religious country.

[Religion] “Nones” on the Rise
One-in-Five Adults Have No Religious Affiliation

What's ahead for US as more Americans lose connection to religion

Young, white Americans are driving the trend, with as many as one-third saying they affiliate with no religion, a new survey says. It could affect notions of family and the shape of politics.

Arkansas Republican Endorses Death Penalty for Rebellious Children
Charlie Fuqua, the Republican candidate for the Arkansas House of Representatives who called for expelling Muslims from the United States in his book, also wrote in support for instituting the death penalty for 'rebellious children.' (photo: AP)
man running as a Republican for State Representative in Arkansas published a book in which he endorses the death penalty for rebellious children and much, much more. In his book "God's Law: The Only Political Solution," published in April, former Arkansas Department of Human Services attorney Charlie Fuqua explains that he supports killing wayward kids because that's what a Bronze Age tribe did in his favorite religious text.

Genetically Modified Food Industry's Dirty Little Secret
s a scientist at Pesticide Action Network, I am frequently asked these days to explain what genetically engineered (GE) crops have to do with pesticides. When I answer that GE crops both contain and drive up pesticide use, I am often met with earnest incredulity. We seem to need to believe that GE technology is the best thing since sliced bread.

Saving Christ from the Self-Proclaimed Christians of the Corporate Church

The primary purpose of all meditation is to attain clarity of mind and union with one's Beloved. This attainment of Absolute Mind is called Bliss, Nirvana, Orgasmic Release, etc. To experience this means one needs to subdue the clattering, chattering conditioned mind of Ego and surrender to the profound silence inherent in the Greater Mind. This Mind is beyond the Bible thumping preacher. Often, the preacher does not act as a catalyst to salvation; indeed, through his theology-philosophy he oftentimes hinders it and keeps us stuck in ego--his ego and our own.

Report: US Protestants lose majority status
For the first time in its history, the United States does not have a Protestant majority, according to a new study. One reason: The number of Americans with no religious affiliation is on the rise. The percentage of Protestant adults in the U.S. has reached a low of 48 percent...Among the reasons for the change are the growth in nondenominational Christians who can no longer be categorized as Protestant, and a spike in the number of American adults who say they have no religion. The Pew study, released Tuesday, found that about 20 percent of Americans say they have no religious affiliation, an increase from 15 percent in the last five years.

What All Third Parties Can Agree On
Some reformers, most likely in support of the Occupy movement, are proposing an amendment to overturn the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling in 2010 that empowers corporations to unfairly influence political campaigns with large financial donations.

Are Humans Monogamous or Polygamous?

Archaeologists, anthropologists, and biologists agree: It’s complicated.
What Christians Don’t Know About IsraelAmerican Jews sympathetic to Israel dominate key positions in all areas of our government where decisions are made regarding the Middle East. This being the case, is there any hope of ever changing U.S. policy? President Bill Clinton as well as most members of Congress support Israel—and they know why. U.S. Jews sympathetic to Israel donate lavishly to their campaign coffers.
Walmart Wants to Be Your Bank, People Who Are Sick of BanksWalmart first tried and failed (and failed and failed and failed) to get a bank charter. Now their attitude seems to be "screw it, death to banks." Their customers may feel the same way.

Terrorism mythology doesn't square with the data

Real terrorists aren't much like the masterminds of popular imagination who use sophisticated weapons in deadly attacks, Gary LaFree said Oct. 4. LaFree directs the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, known as START, based at the University of Maryland. In a lecture at the university's College Park campus, he said a mythology around terrorism has blossomed since 9/11 and doesn't square with the data START has compiled.

Occupy Members Defend People From Home Eviction
Occupy Movement is defending people from eviction from homes. This happened in many places. In Atlanta, they have defended retired police officers from eviction.

Chávez Wins, Chávez es el pueblo , Chávez Is The People
Frustrating status quo-aspiration and falsifying most of the mainstream expectation coated with predictions, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has won a fourth term in office. It's a victory of the under-classes. His new six-year term will begin next year, on the 10 th of January, and the common people expect: the Bolivarian revolution, as Chávez identifies, will continue.

The Persecution of WikiLeaks
The just finished Banned Books Week serves as a vivid reminder that we must be vigilant about freedom of expression and freedom from censorship. Absent this vigilance, we could wake up in a society that not only bans books, but takes the next step and burns them as well. The German writer, Heinrich Heine, extended this with grim historical accuracy: “Where books are burned, it ends in burning people.”

Overwrought Empire
Americans lived in a “victory culture” for much of the twentieth century. You could say that we experienced an almost 75-year stretch of triumphalism -- think of it as the real “American Century” -- from World War I to the end of the Cold War, with time off for a destructive stalemate in Korea and a defeat in Vietnam too shocking to absorb or shake off.

Bill Nye slams GOP Rep. on science committee: Creationism is ‘not in the national interest’
The reaction was triggered by a video of Broun’s comments to a Baptist church last month, which begins with him calling himself a “scientist.” Broun is a medical doctor who earned a degree in chemistry.

Tribunal Weighs Crimes on Palestine
A “peoples” tribunal, modeled after an examination of U.S. war crimes in Vietnam, is exploring Israel’s mistreatment of the Palestinians. Meeting in New York City, the Russell Tribunal on Palestine sometimes was legalistic but addressed frequently ignored issues, says Danny Schechter.

One-Fifth of Americans Now Religiously Unaffiliated

Political strategists, take note: Nearly 1 in 5 Americans now identify themselves as "unaffiliated" when it comes to their religious denomination. That's according to a new Pew survey out Tuesday tracking the so-called religious "nones," a group that's increased by 5 percentage points in the past five years—and roughly 10 points in the past two decades—to 19.6 percent of all Americans, or about 46 million people.

Vindication for our right to protest
Nearly 100 Occupy Chicago activists are celebrating a victory after a judge dismissed the charges against them stemming from protests last fall when they were arrested for exercising their right to protest. One of the arrested activists, Rachel Cohen, explains what the ruling means for the struggle to defend civil liberties in Rahm Emanuel's Chicago.

Adding Civil Liberties to the Debate?
At a campaign event yesterday, Obama mentioned that the candidates have yet to discuss civil liberties:
The President's absolutely right – civil liberties should be added to the debate. But, I'm surprised Obama would even want to broach the subject considering how the discussion would go. Kill lists, assassination of Americans, increased surveillance, secret laws, prosecution of whistleblowers, attacks on journalists and silencing dissent. If Obama wants to discuss civil liberties, he should be held accountable for the obliteration of the First, Fourth, and Fifth amendments occurring under his watch, if not under his direction.

Why U.S. Media Won’t Show You These Protests

In recent weeks, hundreds of thousands of people in Spain have held a series of protests against their government, calling for an end to ongoing austerity measures. It’s big news, and yet, if you’re like most Americans, you’re not even aware of the Spanish uprisings.
