Iraq: How the CIA Says It Blew It On Saddam’s WMD
Now that we’re out of Iraq, the CIA has come clean on how come it was bamboozled about Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction. The FOIA ferrets over at the National Security Archive petitioned for, and got, the Central Intelligence Agency’s equivalent of the dog-ate-my-homework (technically, the NSA obtained this document under a Mandatory Declassification Review request it made in 2006, which can be faster [it still took six years!] than an FOIA request, if the requester has sufficient details on a specific document).
U.S. Covering Up Torture
The United States government during the Bush administration tortured opponents of Muammar Gaddafi, then transferred them to mistreatment in Libya, according to accounts by former detainees and recently uncovered CIA and UK Secret Service documents, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. One former detainee alleged he was waterboarded and another described a similar form of water torture, contradicting claims by Bush administration officials that only three men in US custody had been water-boarded.
Top Ten Ways We Are Better Off Than in January 2009
t is breathtaking impudence that Republicans should try to campaign on whether we are better off than were were in the last six months of the Bush administration. I can't believe we are even arguing about this. Seriously? The country had fallen off a cliff in the last years of Bush, or rather had been pushed off one by GOP policies.

Report: Libyans claim waterboarding, other CIA abuses
Earlier administrations have fired and prosecuted government officials who provided classified information to the press. They have also tried to force reporters to identify their sources.

Bush, including one prisoner waterboarded by the Central Intelligence Agency, a human-rights advocacy group alleges in a new report.

Corporate Power on Full Display at Dem and GOP Conventions
In the past week, we have been witness to the spectacle of the Republican and Democratic national conventions, events where both parties leave no stone unturned in their attempts to gain the confidence of voting Americans. Perhaps the biggest and best opportunity during presidential campaigns for the parties to differentiate themselves from each other, but the similarities between the two conventions cannot be overlooked.
Comparing DNC Speeches: Michelle Obama's Written 7 Grade Levels Above Ann Romney's
There have been a lot of comparisons made between Michelle Obama's and Ann Romney's convention speeches, but this is a new one to me (via the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs' Smart Politics blog)

Two dozen of this region’s most influential black pastors sat in the cramped conference room of a suburban Baptist church last week, brainstorming how to inspire congregants still dismayed by President Obama’s support for same-sex marriage.
Third-party candidates may hurt Romney in key states
Dark-horse presidential candidates Gary Johnson and Virgil Goode may not be household names, but with a little help from super PACs, they could peel away precious support from Republican Mitt Romney and possibly even President Barack Obama in some key state races.
Monsanto GM Corn Is Creating Super Worms
gricultural giant Monsanto Company has risen to the top of the corporate food chain largely thanks to its seeds. These are no ordinary seeds - they have been genetically modified (GM) to withstand and even produce herbicides and pesticides. Monsanto's GM corn and soybean seeds have become so widespread over the past two decades that now, a new crop of "superweeds" have evolved to resist these potent chemicals. Farmers then have little choice but to buy Monsanto's beefed up seeds in an arms race with nature.

Rogue Mormons Turn Chauvinistic Exceptionalists
Though born-again evangelicals glory in personal life-changing experiences, such openness to change withers when latter-day newcomers defy Protestant sects with truly "born-again," collective do-overs. What's wonderful for individual sinners pales when core Reformation advances are confronted with what the right in other arenas happily elevate as "big ideas."
Flawed organic foods study really just a media psyop to confuse the public about organics while pushing GMOs
If you read the mainstream news headlines today, you might be shocked to see headlines that say things like, "Organic foods no healthier than conventional foods" or "Organic foods may not be healthier for you." You'll see these headlines all across the usual disinfo outlets: NPR, Associated Press, Reuters, Washington Post, WebMD and elsewhere.

2012 Democrats: Remember That Civil Liberties Thing From 2008? Um, Nevermind
For years, we've pointed out that neither major political party in the US seems to be very good on the issues that concern us most around here -- which is truly disappointing. With the Democratic National Convention going on this week, some are pointing out what a difference four years make.

The growing power of the religious right is one reason my guest left the Republican Party and became an Independent. "The mixture of politics and religion," he says, "debases both, and has turned the GOP into an apocalyptic sect." He has his problems with Democrats, too. For one thing, he says, both parties “are captives to corporate loot.”
