Another Generation Becomes First Generation to Live Worse than Parents

"The middle class can’t regain its self-confidence and financial health without a strong economic recovery,"writes Washington Posteconomics columnist Robert Samuelson. "But the economy can’t recover strongly without a financially healthy middle class, which provides most consumer spending.

The Perils of Blind Obedience to Authority

ne can object to some of its particulars, but Frank Bruni has a quite interesting and incisive New York Times column today about a new independent film called Compliance, which explores the human desire to follow and obey authority.

Men Defining Rape: A History

Men have been in the business of deciding when it is okay and when it is not okay to rape women for thousands of years. If Missouri Rep. Todd Akin's claim that women's bodies magically fend off rapist sperm or the GOP's meditation on what's really rape sound medieval to you, that's because they are.

Let’s face it: America needs enemies. The threat of the “red menace” that frightened so many during the long decades of the cold war was also extremely functional in terms of justifying appropriations and reinforcing a permanent and ever expanding military Industrial complex.

The Israeli Police and the Internal Security announced Sunday that three Israeli teenage settlers have been apprehended on suspicion that they are involved in a Molotov attack against a Palestinian car, south of Bethlehem, leading to six moderate-to-severe injuries.

Israeli soldiers invaded, , on Sunday at night and on Monday at dawn several Palestinians communities in the West Bank, and kidnapped eight Palestinians after breaking into their homes and searching them.

Severe attack on Palestinian teen spotlights conflict's impact on Israeli youths

Israelis wonder what it says about society that their youths attacked Palestinian teens in Jerusalem last week. In the past, they've often blamed such attacks on extremists and the mentally ill.
How Far Can Climate Change Go? [Preview]
Business, government or technology forecasts usually look five or 10 years out, 50 years at most. Among climate scientists, there is some talk of century's end. In reality, carbon dioxide dumped into the atmosphere today will affect Earth hundreds of thousands of years hence.

Pennsylvania GOP Senate Candidate: Getting Pregnant From Rape Is ‘Similar’ To Having A Baby Out Of Wedlock

Tom Smith, the Republican challenging Sen. Bob Casey’s (D-PA) seat, suggested that having a child out of wedlock was analogous to rape during an interviewwith a reporter at a press club this afternoon, claimingthat it would have a “similar” effect on a father:

Religious And Civil Rights Groups Call For Hate Crime Hearings

Obama's Warfare: 'From Power To A Policy'

Al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen, was killed last fall at a barbeque with friends. His father, Anwar al-Awlaki, an al-Qaida supporter and also American-born, was killed in a drone strike two weeks earlier in Yemen.

Ex-FBI agent: US government targets Americans for political views

According to The Hill, 17 members of Congress have amassed fortunes of over $20 million, and a total of 35 members of Congress have a net worth valued at over $10 million.

Orwell's 1984 Solution to Criminalize War
“If There was Hope, it must Lie in the Proles”

In George Orwell’s 1984 the Outer Party comprised a mere thirteen percent of the population and was subject to the ideological filters in play at the Ministry of Truth and the broader bureaucratic structure. A specific language and way of thinking were closely adhered to. Given their political import, Outer Party members were the most heavily indoctrinated and controlled inhabitants of Oceania. The majority Proles who constituted the remainder of the population was of little consequence so long as their political awareness remained underdeveloped.

Are Human Rights Becoming a Tool of US "Smart Power"?
Lies about war, in humanitarian disguise, were clearly evident in Chicago last March. Peace activist Ann Wright (a former Foreign Service State Department official and retired U.S. Army colonel); Ann Galloway, a member of Women Against Military Madness, and myself were among the thousands of antiwar activists who were in Chicago for the protest of NATO wars. There we noticed, in billboards and announcements, the new campaign of Amnesty International-USA: "Human Rights for Women and Girls in Afghanistan––NATO: Keep the Progress Going."

Republicans Held Disaster Relief Hostage Several Times In 2011

Republicans have largely canceled the first day of the Republican National Convention in Tampa Bay, Florida, due to the storm, which swiped southern Florida yesterday. But in 2011, House Republicans displayed far less concern for the victims of natural disasters, attempting to slash funds for disaster preparedness and response, as Slate’s Dave Weigel noted at the time:

The Stupidification of All Media: Murdoch-Owned National Geographic Channel Does UFO Invasion Poll

The channel surveyed 1,114 Americans in late May to get their thoughts on all things alien in anticipation of the channel’s upcoming series "Chasing UFOs." It even asked which superhero Americans would turn to first in the event of an alien invasion. (It’s the Hulk.)

Gun Violence: This is Our Dystopian Future

Nine passers-by were also wounded, and it seems almost certain that some or all were accidentally hit by the police. This isn't surprising; it's only in movies that people are good shots during a violent encounter. In 2008, Al Baker reported in The Times that the accuracy rate for New York City officers firing in the line of duty was 34 percent.

Bill Moyers on the Poor: "Invisible Americans Get the Silent Treatment"

It's just astonishing to us how long this campaign has gone on with no discussion of what's happening to poor people. Official Washington continues to see poverty with tunnel vision - "out of sight, out of mind."

EXPOSED: Official Game Rules of American Politics (satire)

Editor's note: WikiLeaks just released excerpts from a top secret government document titled: "Official Rules and Strategies of American Politics". Most Americans don't realize politics is a game and like any legitimate game, it has official rules and strategies. Obviously our politicians don't want us to know the secret inner workings of this complex game. Outraged members of Congress urged the UK to storm Ecuador 's London embassy and arrest Julian Assange for crimes against humanity.

Can The War Israel Wants With Iran Be Averted?

Nations faced with agression often seek alliances, support and solidarity, and Iran is no exception. The meeting of the non-aligned nations in Tehran, and the decision by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki moon to attend, is raising hackles among western warriors and propagandists.

When Will Nation's Most Powerful Show Regard for Nation's Most Vulnerable?

This is the second post in TheNation.com’s #TalkPoverty series—an effort to push a deeper conversation about poverty into the mainstream political debate. The series profiles people working on poverty-related issues, and lays out the questions they want president Obama and Governor Romney to answer. You can read the first post here.

Giving In to the Surveillance State

The foundations of this surveillance apparatus were laid soon after 9/11, when President George W. Bush authorized the N.S.A. to monitor the communications records of Americans who analysts suspected had a “nexus to terrorism.” Acting on dubious legal authority, and without warrants, the N.S.A. began intercepting huge amounts of information.

Punks who protested Putin

Three members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in a prison colony on August 17. They were convicted of hooliganism and religious discrimination, but their real crime was to protest Russia's iron-fisted ruler President Vladimir Putin. Belfast Telegraphcolumnist Eamonn McCann wrote this article on the eve of the sentencing.

One Man Against The Wall Street Lobby

Two diametrically opposed views of Wall Street and the dangers posed by global megabanks came more clearly into focus last week. On the one hand, William B. Harrison, Jr. -- former chairman of JP Morgan Chase -- argued in the New York Times that today's massive banks are an essential part of a well-functioning market economy, and not at all helped by implicit government subsidies.

Though politics will be the name of the game, it's a safe bet that religion will also play a major role. The convention opens with a prayer from a Hispanic evangelical leader and closes with a benediction from a Catholic cleric who's sometimes called "America's pope."

The GOP Attempts to Drag America Back to Their Imaginary Conservative Utopia

World history is replete with examples of nations dominated and controlled by religious regimes, and in nearly every case they were extremely authoritarian and restrictive. In the modern era the example that stands out as typical religious regime is Afghanistan under Taliban rule, and there are similarities to Puritanical America as far as strict adherence to religious ideology. When this nation’s founders wrote the Constitution they specifically included, in the First Amendment, a provision to prohibit religion from interfering in government or the private lives of citizens, and it has been a protection against theocracy for 231 years. Christian conservatives and Republicans have waged a ferocious battle to prevent a religion they hate from imposing its laws on the American judicial system regardless there is no evidence Islamic law is supplanting the Constitution.

For their experiment, researchers from the Universities of Oxford, Geneva and California (Berkeley) called in a group of Computer Science students. The students knew they were part of a security-related experiment but did not know the objectives or that they were being "hacked." Each of these students put on a Emotiv BCI and were sat down in front of a computer that displayed a series of images such as maps, banks, card PINs, and so on.
